CHAPTER 01 · LESSON 02

Candlestick-chart basics

A candlestick compresses four prices from one fixed period. It records what happened; it does not guarantee what happens next.

What one candle records

The body spans open to close. The wicks show the highest and lowest prices reached during the period. Display colours can be customised, so the price relationship matters more than red or green.

Context before pattern name

The same shape can mean different things near a tested level, in the middle of a range or during an event-driven move. Check trend, location, timeframe and subsequent acceptance.

Sequences carry more information

Compare progress, overlap, expansion, contraction and closing position across several candles. A brief move beyond a boundary is weaker evidence than sustained acceptance outside it.
